The only way to reach Navagio viewpoint is by road
There is no bus to the clifftop viewpoint above Shipwreck Beach. A rental car is the practical way to get there, time your visit, and move on to the Blue Caves the same morning.
From the most photographed beach in Greece to sea turtle nesting shores and Venetian hilltop villages — each one requires a car to reach on your own schedule.

The clifftop viewpoint above Navagio is only reachable by road — a car is the only practical way to get there without a tour. Arrive before 09:00 or after 17:00 to have the viewpoint to yourself. The beach itself is accessible by boat only; local operators run short trips from Porto Vromi.

The northernmost tip of Zakynthos is where the island's limestone meets the Ionian Sea, creating a series of sea caves with electric-blue water caused by light refraction. Drive to Cape Skinari and board one of the small local boats for the 20-minute cave tour. Best visited in the morning when light penetrates deepest.

Zakynthos hosts the largest loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting population in the Mediterranean. Laganas, Kalamaki and Gerakas beaches are inside the National Marine Park. Night driving restrictions apply June–August on beach access roads — plan daytime visits and use the signed park parking areas.

Rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake in a Venetian-neoclassical style, the island's capital has an elegant waterfront, the Byzantine Museum with rescued icons, and the hilltop Venetian castle with panoramic views over the bay. Park at the port and walk — the town centre is compact.
Zakynthos is one of the greenest and hilliest islands in Greece — the interior roads reward drivers with pine forests, olive groves and Venetian villages that are invisible from the coast.

2–2.5 hours total driving time for the full loop
Drive north along the salt flats at Alykes, then follow the coastal road to Cape Skinari for Blue Caves boat trips. Continue on the ridge road through Anafonitria and Volimes to reach the Navagio clifftop viewpoint. Return south through Exo Chora for the full circuit.

30–45 min from Zakynthos Town
The island's interior holds a cluster of villages that survived the 1953 earthquake, each with a freestanding Venetian bell tower — a style unique to Zakynthos. Kiliomeno has the best-preserved tower; Agios Leon has a working traditional taverna; Exo Chora sits at the ridge with views across to Kefalonia.

20–35 min from Zakynthos Town
All three beaches are inside the National Marine Park. Gerakas at the southern tip is the least crowded and most ecologically protected. Go in the morning — afternoon light is best at Gerakas and the beach road closes at night. The protected Dafni beach on the Vassilikos peninsula has a steep, rough dirt access road; drive carefully and use the designated parking areas.

30–40 min from Zakynthos Town
Drive south through Keri village — famous for its natural tar springs documented by Herodotus — to the lighthouse at the island's southern cape. The viewpoint looks directly into the Keri sea arches, some of the largest natural rock arches in Greece. Local boat tours depart from the small Keri harbour below.
Night driving restrictions in the Marine Park (June–August)
Beach access roads in Laganas, Kalamaki and Gerakas are closed to vehicles after dark during turtle nesting season. Plan all marine park visits during daylight hours and don't rely on evening access.
Navagio viewpoint: arrive early or late
The clifftop car park above Shipwreck Beach fills completely by 10:00 in July and August. Arrive before 09:00 or after 17:00. The viewpoint is on an unguarded cliff edge — stay behind the barriers.
Mountain roads are narrow and steep
Interior roads to the Venetian villages are tarmacked but single-lane with few passing places. Drive slowly, use your horn on blind bends, and avoid large vehicles. A small hatchback is easier to manoeuvre than an SUV.
Fuel up in Zakynthos Town or Laganas
Northern villages (Volimes, Anafonitria) have limited petrol stations with restricted hours. Fill the tank before heading north for the Blue Caves and Navagio loop.
Porto Vromi for Navagio boat trips
The closest boat departure point for Navagio beach is Porto Vromi on the west coast — about 25–30 minutes by car from the viewpoint due to the winding mountain roads. Smaller boats here mean shorter queues than the larger operators from Zakynthos Town port.
Return car before peak departure times
ZTH Airport handles multiple simultaneous departures in peak season. Plan your return at least 30 minutes before standard check-in to avoid queues at the rental desk.
Yes. By selecting full insurance (zero excess) through Karpadu, the local supplier waives the deposit entirely. You can pay by debit card or cash — no credit card is required at any stage.
You need a car to reach the clifftop viewpoint — there is no regular bus service to the overlook. The beach itself is only accessible by boat. Renting a car lets you time your visit freely and combine it with Blue Caves the same morning.
No. Beach access roads in the National Marine Park (Laganas, Kalamaki, Gerakas) are closed to vehicles after dark from June to August. Plan all marine park visits during daylight hours.
A full circuit is approximately 120 km and takes around 2.5–3 hours without stops. A full day with a car comfortably covers the North Cape loop (Blue Caves + Navagio viewpoint), a turtle beach and Zakynthos Town.
Book in minutes, choose your flexible insurance and collect the car as soon as you land at ZTH.
