Naxos has the best roads in the Cyclades
Unlike smaller islands, Naxos has wide, well-maintained tarmac reaching most villages and beaches. A standard saloon or hatchback is fine for the entire island.
Drive from ancient marble gates to deserted beach tracks and mountain villages that still live by the old calendar.

The enormous marble doorway of an unfinished 6th-century BC temple stands on the islet of Palatia, connected to Naxos Town by a causeway. Park near the harbour and walk five minutes. Sunset here rivals anything in the Cyclades.

A 10.7-metre unfinished marble kouros statue abandoned in an ancient quarry garden, surrounded by olive trees and a freshwater spring. One of two such statues on the island – the other is at Apollonas in the north.

Halki is the well-preserved neo-classical heart of the Naxos interior: a distillery producing the island's famous kitron citron liqueur, Byzantine churches, and tower mansions. Continue to Apiranthos, the marble-paved mountain village whose streets are impossible without a parked car outside.

Three kilometres of uninterrupted fine white sand facing the open Aegean – the longest beach in the Cyclades. The southern end at Kastraki is the quietest; the northern end near Agia Anna has tavernas and beach bars. Park at either end and walk.
Naxos rewards drivers more than any other Cycladic island – the roads are good, the distances short, and the variety unmatched.

25–35 min from Naxos Town
String together four of the Cyclades' best beaches in a single morning: Agios Prokopios (families, calm water), Agia Anna (tavernas, easy parking), Plaka (wild and long), and Kastraki (quiet, dunes). Return via the inland shortcut through Agios Arsenios.

30–50 min from Naxos Town
The best single driving loop on the island. Halki for kitron tasting, Apiranthos for marble streets and local museum, Koronos for dramatic mountain scenery and a taverna lunch at altitude. Return via Filoti for views of Mount Zas.

60–70 min from Naxos Town
Drive the north coast road to Apollonas where a 10.5-metre unfinished kouros lies in a clifftop quarry above the sea. Continue to Abram for a swim in an isolated cove before returning inland via Koronos.

30–40 min from Naxos Town
An exceptionally well-preserved 6th-century BC marble temple to Demeter, partially reconstructed and set in an open agricultural landscape. Pair with Halki village 10 minutes away for a half-day of antiquities and lunch.
Naxos has the best roads in the Cyclades
Unlike Mykonos or Paros, most Naxos roads are wide, well-surfaced tarmac. A standard car reaches every attraction on this list without difficulty.
Fill up before heading inland
Naxos Town has several petrol stations open until late. Mountain villages (Apiranthos, Koronos) may have a single pump that closes early – don't rely on it.
Apiranthos: park outside the village
The marble streets of Apiranthos are too narrow to drive. Park at the lower entrance and walk up – the village is small enough to cover in 30 minutes on foot.
Plaka beach parking
There is no single car park at Plaka – pull off at any of the signposted sandy tracks along the road and walk to the water. The further south, the quieter.
Mountain roads: take it slow after dark
Inland roads are well-surfaced but narrow and unlit at night. Plan village visits before sunset and return on the main coastal road after dark.
Return the car before peak departure times
JNX Airport handles several overlapping departures mid-morning in season. Plan your return at least 30 minutes before standard check-in to avoid queues.

What you see is what you pay at pickup.
Naxos is an island, so all rentals start and end at the same point — Naxos Airport (JNX). If you are arriving by ferry at Naxos Port (Naxos Town), mention it in your booking notes and we will do our best to arrange a port handover.
No. Naxos has the best-maintained road network in the Cyclades — a standard compact or hatchback reaches every beach, village, and archaeological site on the island. A small SUV adds comfort on the dusty track to Kastraki beach, but it is not necessary. Avoid any unmarked dirt tracks regardless of vehicle: they void all insurance.
Pickup is at Naxos Airport (JNX). Add your flight number when booking and our local partner will have the car ready at the airport when you land. If you are arriving by ferry, mention it in the booking notes and we will arrange the handover at Naxos Port where possible.
The full perimeter is roughly 110 km and takes about 2.5–3 hours without stops. A full day by car comfortably covers the marble village loop (Apeiranthos, Filoti), the west-coast beaches (Agios Prokopios, Plaka, Kastraki), and either the Portara at sunset or the Apollonas Kouros in the north.
The Portara (Temple of Apollo) is best at sunset — arrive 30–40 minutes early in summer as the area fills up fast. Apollonas Kouros is better in the morning before the tour buses arrive, ideally before 10:00. Both are free to visit and the drive north through Naxos village is one of the most scenic routes on the island.
Agios Prokopios and Agios Georgios are closest to town and easy to park. Plaka is a long unspoilt stretch about 20–25 minutes south — arrive before 10:00 in August. Kastraki requires a short dirt track (fine with any car, go slowly). For the remote east-coast beaches like Psili Ammos, a full tank and early start are recommended.
Naxos is one of the most popular Cyclades destinations — in July and August, the island fills up fast. Book at least 4–6 weeks in advance for peak season to secure your preferred car and the best price. For shoulder season (May, June, September), 1–2 weeks ahead is usually fine.
Book in minutes, choose flexible insurance, and pick up your car the moment you land at JNX.
