Start early for hotspots
Elafonissi and Falassarna fill up fast. Leave before 8:00 to park close and enjoy calmer seas.
Respect the shoulder lane
On the National Road, locals keep right on the shoulder so faster cars can pass safely.
Old Town parking
Park outside the Venetian walls and walk in; streets are narrow and often pedestrian-only.
Fuel & cards
Most stations take cards, but keep some cash for remote villages or late-night fill-ups.
Wind & gravel
On exposed coastal roads, go slower when windy and avoid tight turns on loose gravel.
No toll roads
Crete has zero tolls — explore freely without extra road fees.

Yes — flexible one-way drop-off is available across almost all of Crete. Pick up at Chania Airport (CHQ) or the Old Town and return the car in Heraklion (HER), Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos, or other locations. Select different pickup and drop-off points when searching and the available combinations will appear. Perfect if you're flying into Chania and out of Heraklion.
Arrive before 08:30 to get a parking spot, enjoy calmer water, and avoid the heavy traffic that builds on the mountain and coastal roads after 10:00. Both beaches are 1–1.5 hours from Chania and the drive is scenic but winding — an automatic car makes it far more relaxed.
Free and paid lots sit just outside the Venetian walls — from there it's a 5–10 minute walk into the old harbour. Avoid driving inside the pedestrian lanes. In peak summer the lots fill by 10:00, so park early or use the larger lot near Plateia 1866.
For coastal drives and beach hopping, a compact or economy car is fine on the main roads. If you plan to reach Elafonissi, the Samaria Gorge trailhead, or smaller villages via mountain roads, a small SUV or crossover handles the hairpin bends and occasional gravel stretches more comfortably. Stick to paved roads — off-road tracks void all insurance.
Rethymno is about 50–60 minutes east on the E75. Heraklion is around 2–2.5 hours. Elafonissi beach is roughly 1.5 hours southwest. Falassarna is about 45–60 minutes. Kissamos (Kastelli) is 35–40 minutes west. The north coast motorway is fast; inland and south coast routes take longer.
Yes. Add your CHQ flight number when booking and our local partners track arrivals in real time. Late-night handovers are available, though an out-of-hours fee may apply depending on the partner. You'll receive full contact details before arrival so there's no guesswork at the airport.
A car is the most flexible option. Drive to Xyloskalo (the gorge entrance) in about 45–50 minutes from Chania, park there, and hike down to Agia Roumeli. Most hikers take a ferry back to Sfakia and then a bus or taxi to their car — book the return ferry before you descend, especially in July and August when it fills up.
Book in minutes, choose flexible insurance, and collect your car exactly where you land or stay.
