20–30 min drive + boat
Go early for quieter tours; combine with a swim in Plaka and lunch by the sea.

45–60 min one way
Windmills, cool air, and cave visits; stop in traditional tavernas for mezze.

35–45 min drive + boat
Drive to Ierapetra, take the boat to Chrissi for turquoise water and cedar dunes.

90–110 min one way
Longer run to Crete’s palm forest beach; pair with wine tasting at Toplou.
Arrive early at Spinalonga docks
Beat the tour coaches by taking the first boats from Elounda or Plaka.
Mind the coastal wind
On exposed roads to Plaka or Sitia, slow down when gusts pick up.
Parking near the lake
Use marina/port lots and walk 3–5 minutes into the center; street spots fill fast.
Fuel up before long drives
Stations thin out past Elounda and toward Sitia—top up in town.
Cash for small villages
Most spots take cards, but small kafeneia in Kritsa or Mochlos may prefer cash.
No toll roads
Crete has no tolls; plan time for scenic, slower coastal routes.

Yes — flexible one-way drop-off is available across almost all of Crete. Pick up in Agios Nikolaos or Elounda and return the car at Heraklion Airport (HER), Chania (CHQ), Rethymno, or other locations. Select different pickup and drop-off points when searching to see all available combinations.
We offer pickup at the Agios Nikolaos marina, Elounda, Plaka, and most hotels in the Mirabello Bay area. Delivery to your accommodation is often available — just add the address in your booking notes. For arrivals by air, we can arrange a transfer from Heraklion Airport (HER), about 60–75 minutes away.
For Spinalonga, catch the first boat before 09:00 — the island is far quieter and the light is better for photos. For Vai, arrive before 10:00 to get a parking spot easily; the beach fills quickly in summer. Both are best avoided between 11:00 and 15:00 in July and August.
Use the port and marina car parks and walk in — it's only a few minutes on foot. Evenings are busy in summer, so arrive before 19:00 to find a spot. The lake-side streets are mostly pedestrian; driving in is not recommended.
For coastal drives to Elounda, Sitia, and Vai, a compact or economy car handles the roads perfectly. If you want to explore the Lasithi Plateau, Kritsa village, or reach more remote beaches via unsurfaced tracks, a small SUV gives extra clearance and confidence. Never take a rental car off marked roads — it voids all insurance.
Heraklion is about 60–75 minutes west on the E75. Elounda is 15–20 minutes. Sitia is about 75–90 minutes east. Ierapetra is roughly 35–45 minutes south via the cross-island road. The Lasithi Plateau is about 60–75 minutes through mountain switchbacks.
Two to three days covers the main highlights: Spinalonga, Vai, Elounda, and Lake Voulismeni. Add another day for the Lasithi Plateau and Kritsa. If you plan a road trip to Chania or the south coast, four to five days is ideal — or rent for your full stay to keep maximum freedom.
Book in minutes, choose flexible insurance, and collect your car where you land or stay.
