In Kourtaliotiko or Kotsifou, keep right, go slower on curves, and use pull-outs to let locals pass.
Cash for south coast

Wind awareness
South-coast roads can be gusty; reduce speed on exposed stretches.
No tolls
All routes are toll-free; plan time for scenic, slower drives.

Yes — flexible one-way drop-off is available across almost all of Crete. Pick up in Rethymno and return at Heraklion Airport (HER), Chania Airport (CHQ), Agios Nikolaos, or other locations. Select different pickup and drop-off points when searching to see all available combinations.
We offer pickup at Rethymno harbour, the edge of the old town, and most hotels and villas in the area — just add your address in the booking notes. Rethymno has no airport; if you are arriving by air, the nearest airports are Heraklion (HER, ~75–90 min) and Chania (CHQ, ~50–60 min). We can arrange delivery from either airport to Rethymno on request.
Use the public car parks just outside the Venetian walls — the old town itself is mostly pedestrian. The lot near the Fortezza and the harbour parking are the most convenient. Summer evenings fill fast, so arrive before 19:00 or plan to walk a short distance from a side street.
Drive via the fully paved road to the upper car park, then follow the marked trail down to the beach — wear proper shoes as the path is steep and rocky. Arrive before 10:00 to secure parking and beat the heat. Avoid returning after dark as the path has no lighting. A compact car handles the drive fine; no 4x4 needed.
For the north coast road and city visits, a compact or economy car is more than enough. If you plan to explore the south coast — Plakias, Agios Pavlos, or the road to Preveli — the routes are fully paved but narrow and winding, so a smaller car is actually an advantage. A small SUV adds comfort on longer mountain drives to villages like Spili or Argyroupoli.
Chania is about 50–60 minutes west on the E75. Heraklion is roughly 75–90 minutes east. Plakias on the south coast is about 45–55 minutes via the mountain road. Preveli is around 50–60 minutes. Agios Nikolaos is about 2 hours east. The north coast motorway is fast; south coast and mountain routes take longer but are very scenic.
Two days covers the essentials: the old town and Fortezza, Preveli beach, and one south-coast village. Add a third day for the Amari Valley, Spili, or Argyroupoli. If you want to day-trip to Elafonissi or Knossos, four to five days lets you explore comfortably without feeling rushed.
Book in minutes, choose flexible insurance, and collect your car where you stay.
