The one island big enough to need a car for a week. Knossos and the north-coast national road first, then the Samaria Gorge, Elafonissi and the empty south coast. No tolls anywhere on it.
Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos. The bus reaches the famous beaches and the car reaches the rest. Naxos has the widest roads of the four, Santorini the narrowest — go small for the caldera villages.
Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia — green, mountainous, and built for slow coastal driving on single-lane roads. Igoumenitsa and Preveza are the mainland gateways, both a short crossing away.
Athens for the Peloponnese, Delphi and Cape Sounion; Thessaloniki for Halkidiki, Meteora and Mount Olympus. Tolled motorways make the distances shorter than the map makes them look.

Right-hand side, asphalt only
Greece drives on the right and overtakes on the left. The rental agreement also keeps you on surfaced roads: dirt tracks and off-road driving void every insurance plan, Premium included.
Minimum age 21 – except Crete
Most of Greece asks for 21 and a licence held at least one year. Crete is the exception at 18, though some categories still want 21. Your Booking Voucher states the requirement, and the age filter shows only what you can book.
IDP for non-EU licences
EU and EEA licences are accepted as issued. A licence from anywhere else — the UK, US, Australia, Canada — needs an International Driving Permit carried alongside it. That is Greek law, and without it the car stays at the desk.
Tolls on the mainland, none on the islands
The A1 to Thessaloniki, the A8 to Patras, the A2 Egnatia and the Attiki Odos ring road out to Athens Airport all charge per section, in cash or by card. No Greek island has a toll road. Fines follow you home with an admin fee on top.
Ferries need a permission, not a phone call
Taking the car onto a ferry requires a Ferry Boarding Permission, bought in advance and charged per crossing — a return trip counts as two. Boarding without one voids your insurance for the whole rental, not just the crossing.
Park outside the old towns
Chania, Rethymno, Corfu Town and the medieval walls of Rhodes are pedestrianised or simply unparkable. Use a signed car park on the edge and walk in. In Athens the kerb lines decide it: white is paid visitor parking, blue is residents only.
