No Credit Card Needed – Debit Card Accepted

Car Rental in Kosovo – from Pristina Airport to Prizren, Peja and the monasteries of the west

You can cross Kosovo in under two hours, and most of what people come for is outside the capital. There's Ottoman Prizren under its fortress, the medieval monasteries at Peja and Dečani, the old bazaar in Gjakova and the Sharr mountains to the south. Each one is a day trip from Pristina Airport, and few of them are easy to reach by bus.

Why rent a car with Karpadu in Kosovo

Debit card, not credit card

Rent in Kosovo with the debit card you already travel with. The deposit is held on it at the counter and released once the car is back, and you see the amount while you are still choosing.

Full Insurance lowers the deposit

Each car offers Basic and Full Insurance. Full cuts both the excess and the deposit held on your card, and both figures are on the car before you book.

One base, the whole country

Kosovo is under 150 km across. From a hotel in Pristina, Prizren, Peja, Gjakova and the Sharr mountains are all day trips, with no need to change base.

Unlimited mileage

You pay for the days, not the distance. The motorway to Prizren, the climb into Rugova and a detour out to Novo Brdo don't add anything to the price.

Direct prices, no counter fee

The price on each car comes straight from the local partner, and it's the price you pay at pick-up. Nothing gets added at the desk in the terminal.

Where you can pick up in Kosovo

One counter, at Pristina Airport south-west of the capital. Open its page for the road out of the terminal, drive times and what is worth the detour nearby.

Kosovo, region by region

Each region is measured from Pristina Airport, which sits on the plain south-west of the capital, close to the motorway to Prizren.

Pristina & the centre

The capital about 20 minutes from the terminal, with Germia Park's forest and lake 7 km from the centre, and the excavated Roman city of Ulpiana a short drive south-east.

Prizren & the south

Prizren, the best-preserved Ottoman town in the country, about an hour south-west on the motorway, with the Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš in its old town and the Sharr mountains rising behind it.

Peja, Dečani & Gjakova

The west, about 1h15 away: the Patriarchate of Peć at the mouth of the Rugova gorge, the 14th-century Visoki Dečani monastery, and the old bazaar of Gjakova, the oldest in Kosovo.

Novo Brdo & the east

The hills south-east of the capital, where the ruined fortress of Novo Brdo guards what was one of the richest silver-mining towns of medieval south-east Europe.

Driving in Kosovo

Traffic keeps to the right and distances are short. The rules visitors tend to miss are daytime headlights, the low limits through villages and the paperwork for taking the car across a border.

Headlights on in daylight

Kosovo drives on the right, and dipped headlights or daytime running lights are compulsory during the day. Switch them on as you leave the car park.

50, 80 and 130

Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 on other roads and 130 on the motorways. Villages often post lower limits on the through road, so watch the signs as you enter.

Alcohol limit 0.5 g/l

The general limit is 0.5 grams per litre, as in much of Europe. Village roads are narrow and busy, so most visitors leave the rakia until the car is parked for the night.

Border papers come from the partner

Kosovo isn't part of the Green Card insurance system, so a rental car can only leave with the partner's written permission and its own insurance papers. Sort it out when you book; the border is the wrong place to find out.

Snow in the mountains

The lowland roads stay open all winter, but the roads to Brezovica, Rugova and Novo Brdo climb into snow from December to March. Check that the car has winter tyres before heading up.

Minimum age 21

Rental drivers must be 21 to 75. The youngest and oldest bands, 21–23 and 72–75, carry a surcharge; type your age into the search and the prices shown already include it.

Car hire in Kosovo – FAQ

Do I need a credit card to hire a car in Kosovo?+

No. A debit card is enough. The refundable deposit is held on it at pick-up, whichever cover you choose, and released after you return the car. Check before you fly that your card allows payments abroad and has room for the hold.

Which insurance can I choose in Kosovo?+

Basic Insurance or Full Insurance. Full lowers both the excess and the deposit held on your card, often to around half. The exact figures for each car are shown before you book, so compare them there.

Where can I pick up a car in Kosovo?+

At Pristina Airport (PRN), about 15 km south-west of the capital. It is our only counter in Kosovo for now; your voucher names the meeting point and your pick-up time.

What currency is used, and is Kosovo in the EU?+

Kosovo uses the euro but is not in the EU or the Schengen area, so there is a passport check when you land. Card payments are common in Pristina; carry some cash for villages, monasteries and parking.

Can I drive from Kosovo into neighbouring countries?+

Only if the partner agrees in writing and issues the insurance papers for that country, which you arrange at booking. Kosovo is not part of the Green Card system, so plan any trip to Albania, North Macedonia or Montenegro before you collect the car.

Can I visit the Orthodox monasteries?+

Yes. Gračanica, the Patriarchate of Peć and Visoki Dečani are active monasteries that welcome visitors. Cover shoulders and knees, keep your voice down in the churches, and carry your passport, as ID is checked at some entrances.

Can I see Kosovo from one base?+

Yes. Prizren is about an hour from Pristina, Peja and Gjakova about 1h15, and Brezovica in the Sharr mountains about 1h15. A week based in the capital covers the whole country without changing hotels.

When is the best time to drive in Kosovo?+

May to October, when the mountain roads are clear and the monasteries and gorges are easiest to reach. Winter brings snow to Brezovica and Rugova, good for skiing, but the high roads need winter tyres.
