Street spaces fill fast. Use the marina or port car parks and walk the 3–5 minutes into the centre.
Fuel up before long drives
Petrol stations thin out past Elounda and towards Sitia, so fill up in town first.

Most places take cards, though the small kafeneia in Kritsa or Mochlos may prefer cash.

There are no tolls on Crete, but the scenic coastal routes are slow, so give yourself extra time.

We hand cars over at the Agios Nikolaos marina, in Elounda and Plaka, and at most hotels around Mirabello Bay. Delivery to your accommodation is usually possible — just add the address in your booking notes. If you are flying in, we can arrange a transfer from Heraklion Airport (HER), about 60–75 minutes away.
For Spinalonga, catch the first boat before 09:00: the island is far quieter and the light is better for photos. At Vai, arriving before 10:00 makes parking easy, as the beach fills quickly in summer. In July and August, avoid both between 11:00 and 15:00.
Park at the port or the marina and walk in — it is only a few minutes on foot. Summer evenings are busy, so try to arrive before 19:00. The streets around the lake are mostly pedestrian, so driving in is not worth the trouble.
A compact or economy car handles the coast roads to Elounda, Sitia and Vai perfectly well. For the Lassithi Plateau and Kritsa village, a small SUV is more comfortable on the climbs. Either way, keep to asphalt – the car can go anywhere that is paved, and that covers every route on this page.
Heraklion is about 60–75 minutes west on the E75, and Elounda only 15–20 minutes up the coast. Sitia takes around 75–90 minutes to the east and Ierapetra roughly 35–45 minutes south on the cross-island road. Allow about 60–75 minutes for the Lassithi Plateau, most of it mountain switchbacks.
Two or three days covers the main sights: Spinalonga, Vai, Elounda and Lake Voulismeni. Add a day for the Lassithi Plateau and Kritsa. If you are heading over to Chania or down to the south coast, four or five days works better — plenty of people simply keep the car for their whole stay.
